Although pepper spray is a very good non-lethal deterrent, place two or three aerosol cans of insecticide (Doom, Raid, Mortein) at strategic places in your home. Use that in the place of pepper spray on an intruder.
Advantages:
It’s oil based, not water based.
Not everybody in the house is affected like with pepper spray.
Just make sure that it stay out of reach of children.
